Funny, during lockdown I got bored and did my whole family tree, Traced it back to 1104 which is as far as records go, turns out my first relative more than likely was a soldier (high ranking?) with William the Conqueror. Right throughout the centuries up until the 1800s, we have had high ranking soldiers within the family.
Funny thing is Semper Fidelis appears in the family crest back around the 1500s.

Nice. The records becomes uncertain for my family around 1600. Earliest known ancestors were both pirates (privateers) for different countries. Both were hung for different, non-piracy reasons.... :-)

Historically, my paternal family have been merchants, priests and "sailors" while maternal side were farmers and craftsmen.

Both sides are from a small island community.

Those two were father and son.

The father got hung, but records doesn't say that it was for piracy. More likely, he was hung by the English, as he was a privateer for the Danish navy and they sailed under English flag when doing their job...

His son was more Jack Sparrow like; he got hung for sleeping with someone's daughter while she was engaged to someone else.

All I know about my family is that on my Fathers side we were originally from Norway with the family moving to England in late 1800's / early 1900's. Surname now is Nelson but is thought to originally have been either Neilsen or Neilson or some other similar derivative

So Horatio is unlikely to be on my family tree - However there could well have been several Vikings!
