https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gdmfTYS9R7IWhy The Fields of Anfield Road? The first great love of my life was Liverpool football club and I wanted to have a team to honour there past and present glory.
My Dad had always been a fan of Wolves (Wolverhampton Wanderers) and although it's typical for a son to follow his Father's team, I was having none of it. My favourite player was Kevin Keegan and that made me a Liverpool fan. My Dad took me to see Wolves play one evening when I was 9 years old and they beat Derby County 6-2 in one of the best and craziest games you're ever likely to see. On arriving home my Mum had one question for me " Did you enjoy it? " my response, begrudgingly was "Yes, but it would've been so much better if it was Liverpool."
a few weeks later my Father took me to Anfield and we watched a hard fought game that was goalless after 75 minutes. Then Liverpool did what Liverpool do and went on to win the game there nil, with aging veteran Ian Callahan doing a forward roll after scoring what was then a rare goal for him. My Dad was sold after that and we went most weeks for the next 7 years. Going to home games, away games even travelling across Europe to see European Cup Semi-Finals and Finals.
In 1984, I attended the ill-fated European Cup final against Juventus at Heysel stadium in Brussels, Belgium. 39 Italian fans died that night barely 20 yards from where I stood. After that, I never went to another game until I took my sons to Wembley a few years ago for a pre-season friendly against Barcelona - we beat them 4-0 that day too!
What made Liverpool special for me? The multitude of songs the fans sing in honour of players past and present. The ingenuity behind such songs is insane. Here are a few of my favourites
