New Owners/Salary Cap

Much has been said regarding new owners inheriting bad teams and quitting the game. Just a random thought before a road trip begins for me .. Why not give a new owner the option of rolling over next years dead cap into the current years cap (as much as it can or a percentage)? Here are a few guidelines:

Can only be done once per season. A team can have a couple owners during a season (due to inactivity).
Established owners or second team owners are excluded because you should know going in what you are getting into.

Benefits:

More team participation during FA driving salaries higher.
More new owners establishing a quicker franchise turnaround.
Id be inclined to make the rollover a percentage or everything but $2,000,000 to use towards injuries.

50% Percent Rollover:
Team A:
2019 Cap Available: $20,000,000 ($10,000,000 available to rollover)
2020 Dead Cap: $15,000,000
2020 Adj Dead Cap: $5,000,000

Thoughts? Any additional ideas?

Like many of you Id like to see some more owners stick around .. More Owners = More Leagues.

the problem i have with that is this is a NFL simulation and this idea goes directly against the NFL rules on salary cap / dead money

As well as the distinct possibility of this being misused, for instance an owner rebuilds his team end up with lots of dead cap for the next year but has a good solid team, he then quits and a new player picks up the team he now has a good team with cap space this year but lots of dead cap next year and so gets rid of a lot of the dead cap with your idea

this would give a huge advantage to the new owner if the old owner was doing his trades/cuts right and just happened to end up with a lot of dead cap because of bad contracts the owner before him negotiated

If that is your compliant about his idea that someone could take advantage you really need to call the San Francisco 49ers of the 1990's because when everyone else was having a hard time with the salary cap they actually found ways around it though in the 2000's that **** blew up on them big time where they took big CAP hits because of what they did during the 1990's to work around the salary cap .

That's the thing about the NFL though. There's always a knock on effect down the line. Be it in dead money if you're cutting guys, or in bloated contracts if you restructure and bump money to later years of a deal. If the idea proposed negates that, then it defeats the point of cap management to me. I accept that the mismanagement wouldn't be the fault of the new owner, but it would still create a significant imbalance IMO. I know you're saying to move dead money around rather than delete it, but I still think that would cause issues to balance. You could potentially make a large number of mistakes as an owner that give you a significant leg up on the teams around you at the time, and rather pay for it or multiple seasons, just pay for it in 1 season where you'd probably get a high draft pick as compensation anyway. It's not good for a new owner, but it would be even worse for the other teams competing in the league.

I would think a better idea would be for the new owner to find a better run team to take over, or to be willing to work with what there is.

I don't think this is necessary.

Instead, I think someone taking over a team should evaluate that team before they decide to "become owner".

As I have stated many times, I think there should be a popup message that not only asks you to confirm that you want to "become owner", but also suggests that you evaluate the roster, salary cap and draft pick situation of that team before doing so.

I must admit, as a relatively new owner and the owner of only 1 team, when selecting my team I didn't think to look at it and examine contracts, position breakdowns and all those things.

Fortunately, it was in pretty good shape, but I just looked at the openings and picked the city I thought seemed most interesting, and had the better record at the time.

We don't need this if the new owner is a seasoned player, but someone who has never played MFN before, well I kind of agree with the OP.

I will add that I am DONE taking over lame duck teams that have been ruined by ..
- owners that haven't got a clue what they are doing.
- owners that have bet the bank by trading away loads of draft picks for basically old vets.

It used to appeal to me pulling a team up by the boot straps and leaving it in a much better state, but then you see yet another team ruined in the same league at the seasons end and wonder why you have bothered. Very frustrating and unfair on new owners should they take the plunge and pick up one of these ghost teams.

I look at everything, mostly how many FA at end of season, its hard if half the team goes in the
first year. I just picked up a team that has done nothing for 6 seasons, it will take awhile to turn
it around,but I knew that going in. Do some folks need a hint to look a team over ?

Yeah I understand that, but we have players of all ages that are here and may not realize exactly the work (time) that some of these wrecks need. The last thing we want is new players getting bored and leaving MFN because they've had a bad experience. Its simple stuff like this that makes or breaks interest in these games.

I'm sure this won'r happen though as it could be open to abuse, do we want more of those kinds of threads? :(
