Play Selection

By Action-Jackson

Hello all.

For 1st down I have selected an offensive play mix of 25% outside run, 25% in. run, 25% short pass & 25% med. pass. I'm never close to this mix in spite of situation unless I blow an opponent out and run seems to get called more. I'm generally around 2 to 1 pass vs run. What is happening here? I never see (hot read) or anything but is the QB making a call based on the defense? Also does the game conform to situation i.e. become more conservative when ahead and run more?

Gamplan under the misc settings there is hurry up, slow down, and the GP Distance Adjustment Speed. They are simple ways to control things you describe

I'm aware of those but not really what I'm asking but maybe I'm not clear here?

Hurry up and slow down will make you pass heavy or run heavy respectivelt depending on if you're ahead or not later into the game. While your sliders will show completely even if your team has been trailing in games recently that will skew your play selection pass heavy since once you're in hurry up you don't try to run the ball(outside of a few scenarios I believe.)

You might not be looking at enough games to get a proper sample size because even with a everything being equal you could still organically call passes at a 2:1 ratio without enough time to "even out" your play calling

To my knowledge play selection goes type -> formation from your matrix unless a rule/slider forces something else

Also does the game conform to situation i.e. become more conservative when ahead and run more?

That is the effect of the sliders Ray talked about

Currently, there are hot reads, rare as they may be they work as such. Scout the play, and have your QB/WR intelligent/familair enough with the offensive and defensive play. I think the QB will target the deepest most inner pattern in the direction of the blitzer. Eligible but assigned pass blockers can become targets here.

So, the QB is kinda making reads based on the defensive call, but even when they do happen they dont always look the best. Could be one reason we dont see them often. As it was implemented to counter blitzing versions ago but is in way less occurance 4.4 and on. You will see them cited in the logs when they happen.

Theres a bunch on just play selection alone but what i do know is somettimes one play can be called 5 times more than another with the same settings.

Also does the game conform to situation i.e. become more conservative when ahead and run more?

This would be slow down. A setting of 6 or 8 can be aggressive. As the game goes on and when scores are closer you will see play calls change even with the lowest settings.

GP adjuster is a wacky tool that can be used real creatively. Due to the lack of any rule use, I set mine on 21 alot and play calls swing drasictly. Seth has posted good stuff on it.

Thanks for the info. It's definitely not sample size. I'm talking multiple teams over multiple seasons, downs and formations. I will look more into GP but I thought that just modified short / medium / distance not play selection.

To clarify my run pass mix on 1st down for all distances is the same. 25 / 25 / 25 / 25.

Re: The Playcalling Matrix Randomizer

The main place to look is 'view plays' on your matrix to see the weight of each play. I've seen times where users spend a lot of time setting their personnel and play call values but don't have plays in their active gameplan that match what they're trying to do. (Not saying this is the case with what you did, but checking the 'view plays' gives you the logic the AI uses).

The AI chooses a play thusly:

1. Choose inside run/outside run/short pass/medium pass/long pass
2. Assembles the plays that match this play type and assigns the weights you see on the 'view plays' screen.
3. Chooses a play based on weights (larger weights = higher probability)
4. If no play was available (i.e. you don't have any inside running plays with non-zero personnel and the selection was an inside running play), a play is randomly selected.

Looking at a log from Victory league the I see #4 coming into play.

Randomly? That's a shame. I figured it would just roll the dice to see play type again. Do you know if it's randomly from the other plays listed under View Plays for that scenario or random from all your offensive plays?
