I don't see the need to limit position changes. I think a solution would be to have that player's position automatically change to their best position upon being released.

I do like that much better - also implementing a waiver wire may help. I simply do not read league transactions on a daily basis.

I like the idea of a waiver wire. The team with the highest priority that claims him takes on his contract. If nobody does after 1 day, he becomes a free agent.

I think this would be a great addition to MFN!

This actually was the way it originally worked, but what ended up happening is that there was a single position that tended to be the best position, specifically for the OL, so everyone who was released (including TE's and fullbacks) seemed to land on LG or something like that.

The basis for what positions you could switch to will be based on that player's best rated position, not the current assigned position, so you wouldn't be able to stair step down. It would also be based on max potential, not current skills.

I suppose resetting a player to their drafted position (where they were playing at the time of the draft/creation) would require an extra database spot to keep track -- I had not considered how many players are numerically rated better at some positions but given their physical attributes are not great options at those positions.

I had thought of this too, but consider a player who is moved after he is drafted to another position - i.e. maybe a LB to DL or TE to OL or FB, for example - and is cut after 5-6 seasons. He will regress in his skills for his original position and will improve in his skills in his new position, and if he is returned to his original position he won't look as good as he would in his newer position.

Let's say I have 4 TEs all with max potential in the 80's. I don't want to be prevented from moving one of them to RG (for example) just because his new max would only be 60.

1. I believe you have said before that 60 would be considered starter quality.
2. His max potential could increase with training camp, etc.

Im not sure you see too many TE's playing guard in the NFL.
Heck most of em can't block at the TE position.

In the NFL, college or pretty much any top tier league, if your not big and strong enough your not playing on the line. If your not fast enough your not playing at WR or DB, If you cant throw(unless your name is Tebow. jk) your not playing QB.

TE to OL isn't that unreasonable. There is a LT that has been all pro several years coming from the TE position....Jason Peters. Is it common, maybe not but it does happen.
