Rookie Record-Breaker?

Peyton Manning recently revealed details of a discussion with rookie QB Joe Burreaux giving the young signal caller advice on transitioning to the NFL. "I did tell him there's one record that i wouldn't mind if he broke". Manning, of course, was referring to his record of 28 interceptions thrown by a 1st year QB.

Seriously though; let him fling it, get his bumps and bruises, and maybe speed up the learning curve? Or run the ball more? Like, a lot more? I don't know if a QB would gain experience at the same rate if he throws 50 or 5 passes per game. I have a slightly more accurate QB on the bench: would he progress the same starting, playing only the 4th quarter or not at all? Anybody know how that works?

Currently his accuracy rating is 37/77. His stats are 84 attempts, 11 completions, and 8 interceptions through two games. He seems to be progressing very slowly.

You cannot play a QB that has a functional accuracy that is <= 50. The game freaks out and breaks.

You can blame me for this. I took a team to the playoffs for two straight seasons in USFL with a QB that had an accuracy of like 12. (Wow his Accuracy dropped to 8.)

as far as his progression goes though...

a. how much does playing time affect his progression? play or bench him?
b. does it matter how many times he throws the ball? pass or rush the ball?

I did some experimentation and stat tracking a couple seasons back. It appears from my data that for a QB, the amount of progress is dependent on the play count and his QB rating for the game. Run vs. pass does not appear to factor in very much.

So, a good strategy could be to start your new QB and have him throw some high percentage passes in the red zone while running most of the game (in order to get a good rating). Of course, relying heavily on the run lowers the play count ...

YMMV.
