Holding is a spot of the foul type of call. #15 who gets called for the hold is blocking around the 50 yard line and the receiver actually gets to about the same spot. So minus 10 yards for the hold gets you near the 40 which is beyond what they needed for a first down.

So yeah if it had been an O-lineman who got the holding call it would have set them back and no first down, but because it was a WR who got called and they had plenty of yards to spare, it still resulted in a first down.

Seems legit to me

apologies - I thought you knew what a spot of the foul penalty is. Best example is a defensive pass interference call where the penalty is enforced at the spot of where the foul occurred.

Holding is a spot of the foul penalty - most of them happen at the line of scrimmage so it 10 yards from there. In this case the foul occurred downfield - since the runner advanced the ball to about the same spot as where the penalty occurred (again near the 50) that is where the penalty yardage was counted off. Thus the next snap occurred 10 yards from the 50 (near the 40) and the amount of yardage gained on the play minus the penalty still resulted in a first down.

It is always 10 yards.*

However, if the hold occurs BEHIND the line of scrimmage, the penalty is 10 yards from the line of scrimmage.

If the hold occurs BEYOND the line of scrimmage, the penalty is 10 yards from the spot of the foul.

*unless you're within your own 20, at which point it is half the distance to the goal

You're now going to start noticing it when it happens during a game. The announcers rarely point it out.
